Kingman sits at 3,300 feet and spends July above 105°. Prescott sits two thousand feet higher, averages the mid-80s in summer, and drops below freezing on roughly a hundred nights a year. A system built to survive a Mohave County summer is oversized and inefficient here — it short-cycles, never dehumidifies during monsoon season, and wears out its compressor years early.
The reverse mistake is more common and more expensive. A standard air-source heat pump loses a large share of its output as temperatures approach freezing, and Prescott spends real time there. Sized off a summer cooling load alone, it comes up short in January and falls back on auxiliary electric strip heat — which works, and which shows up as a winter electric bill that makes people call us thinking something is broken. Usually nothing is. It was sized for the wrong season.
Altitude compounds it. Air at 5,300 feet is roughly 17% less dense than at sea level, so a given blower moves less mass and gas-fired equipment needs a derate the manufacturer publishes and plenty of installers skip. We do a Manual J on the actual house, at the actual elevation, and size to it.
