There is a rule of thumb that says replace if the repair costs more than half the unit. It is a bad rule, and it is usually quoted by whoever benefits from the answer. Here is the way we actually think about it.

R-22 was phased out of production and import in the United States in 2020. What remains is reclaimed and recovered stock, and it is priced like a scarce commodity. If you have an R-22 system with a refrigerant leak, you are not deciding whether to repair a machine — you are deciding whether to keep buying an increasingly expensive input for a machine that will need it again.
R-410A systems are the bulk of what is in service now, and the industry has been transitioning again, to lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32, under the AIM Act. R-410A is not vanishing tomorrow the way R-22 did, and a well-running R-410A system is worth repairing. But it does mean that a system installed today is on a different platform than one installed in 2015, and parts commonality is worth asking about.
Manufacturers will tell you 15 to 20 years. In Mohave County that is optimistic, and the reason is runtime. A condenser in Kingman or Bullhead City runs a duty cycle in July that equipment in a temperate climate never sees. Ten to fifteen years is a more realistic planning horizon here, and a well-maintained unit beats a neglected one by years.
The useful version of the age question is not "how old is it" but "how many summers does it have left, and what is the failure that ends it." A twelve-year-old system with a failed capacitor has years left. A twelve-year-old system with a leaking evaporator coil is telling you something.
Most manufacturers cover the compressor and major parts for ten years — but only if the equipment was registered after installation, usually within 60 or 90 days. A great many systems in this county were never registered, which silently cuts that coverage to five years.

An old system is not just a repair risk, it is a monthly line item. Efficiency standards have moved substantially — minimum efficiency for new split-system air conditioners in the Southwest region is meaningfully higher than what was legal when a fifteen-year-old unit was built, and a unit that has lost capacity to a slow leak or a fouled coil performs well below even its own nameplate.
In a climate where cooling is the dominant household energy cost for four months a year, that gap is real money. It is not usually enough on its own to justify replacing a healthy system. It is often enough to tip a borderline one.

Lean replace when it runs R-22, when the failure is the compressor or the evaporator coil, when you have paid for refrigerant more than once, or when the system is past fifteen Arizona summers and something structural has gone.
It genuinely depends everywhere in between — and that is where you want a company that is willing to say so rather than quoting you a system on the first visit.
